Jared Carter is a candidate for the Central District City Council seat. He is a longtime resident of Burlington and the father of two young children – the oldest is in Kindergarten at Sustainability Academy. In addition, Carter is a Professor at Vermont Law School and the director of the Vermont Community Law Center, a nonprofit legal services organization focused on civil rights, constitutional law, and economic justice.
As a candidate Carter advocates a “Burlington Leads” platform and promotes a vision in which City Government invests in people not wall street investors. He believes it is critical that Burlington protects and supports public assets and public spaces. He is also a firm believer in checks and balances and supports a city council that understands its role as a co-equal branch of government.
He also believes that the Central District can be an example of inclusivity and economic vibrancy. To illustrate this point, Carter calls for highlighting the New American family businesses, the influx of young people, and the commitment of longtime working residents of the District. While believing the City should highlight this vibrancy, he firmly believes that the economic justice issues facing Burlington are also ever present in the Old North End and must also be central to our community moving forward. Burlington leads!
