Chip Mason – Ward 5 Candidate

Chip Mason - City Councillor - Ward 5

I’m running for re-election because I want to continue to lead our efforts on creating affordable housing, investing in public infrastructure, downtown and the waterfront, and fighting for proactive climate policy.

I am a fourth generation Burlington resident who graduated from Burlington public schools and the University of Vermont. Following graduation, my interest in public service grew while working in the United States Senate. I attended law school in Portland, Maine and clerked for the Maine Supreme Court. Following the clerkship, I returned to my hometown and Ward 5 where I have lived for 20 years with my wife and two daughters.

Since returning to Burlington, I have been a dedicated public servant committed to serving Burlington residents (6 years as a City Council, 2 years as a trustee of the Burlington Employee Retirement System, 5 years on the Board of Tax Appeals), the disadvantaged (over 15 years of service on the Board of Directors and as an officer of the Lund Family Center, the Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation, the Northern Vermont Chapter of the American Red Cross and an account solicitor for the United Way) and Burlington’s youth (over 15 years as a youth sports coach).

While on the Council, I became a leader serving as the Chair of the Democrats, chair of the Ordinance Committee and the Tax Abatement Committee. Chip has also served as a member of a number of special committees including the Form Based Code Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Permit Reform Committee and the Pension Reform Committee.
